Health Benefits of Ginger

Ginger is one of the most popular flavours, especially around this time of year, but it is also one of the healthiest and most delicious spices. Ginger is often used to help digestion, reduce nausea or to help fight the flu and common cold. This spice can be used fresh, dried, powdered, or as an oil or juice. Ginger’s fragrance and flavor come from the natural oils present in its root, specifically gingerol. Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger and is responsible for much of its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Below are a few other examples of the many benefits of ginger:

  • Ginger May Help Relieve Post Workout Muscle Pain

Ginger has been shown to be effective against exercise-induced muscle pain. A recent study showed that participants who consumed 2 grams of ginger per day for 11 days reported feeling a significant reduction in post workout muscle pain. While ginger does not have an immediate impact on discomfort, its effects are most helpful by reducing the progression of muscle pain. 

  • Ginger May Improve Brain Function and Work to Protect Against Alzheimer's Disease

Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are believed to be among the key drivers of Alzheimer's disease and age-related cognitive decline. Some studies have shown that the antioxidants and bioactive compounds in ginger can inhibit inflammatory responses that occur in the brain. Additional studies have shown that regular consumption of ginger showed an increase in memory retention and response times.

  • Ginger Can Help Fight Common Bacterial Infections

Gingerol, the bioactive substance in fresh ginger, may help lower the risk of some infections. Ginger extract has been shown to inhibit the growth of many different types of bacteria. In particular, it is effective against the oral bacterias such as gingivitis and periodontitis.
