Getting Back on Track

Many of us feel the need to refocus our diet and exercise plans so new starts and resolutions are huge this time of year, not to mention following the holidays and perhaps a few too many indulgent treats. Regardless of whether you set resolutions, often a few tweaks to choices - whether they be diet or exercise focused, can set us up to help us have the best overall health possible.

Here are a few tips to help you feel your best:

  • Food is fuel. Our bodies need nutrients to function. We know that when we choose the healthiest options we feel better. Try to listen to the types of food that your body is asking for. During that mid-afternoon slump, do you really want a coffee or chocolate or would a walk around the block or a glass of water feel better. If chocolate is the answer enjoy it, but take a moment or two to decide what feels best to you.

  • Plan ahead to prevent yourself from becoming hangry. When you let yourself get too hungry it's easy to overeat. Keep nutritious snack handy. Things like fresh fruits, baby carrots, nuts and healthy granola bars can easily be tucked into your purse or backpack.

  • Don't deprive yourself. Cutting out all your favorite foods leads to feelings of deprivation. When you do feel like a favourite food, be sure to be in a place and mindset where you can enjoy the food you are about to eat.

  • Try something new. This is a great opportunity to try a new exercise class – maybe Eldoa or Barre or visit your local market and try a new fruit or vegetable. Who knows you might just find a new favourite workout or food!
